Pro Bono Project: Teen Court
Date: | Tuesday, April 12, 2016 |
Time: | 5:00 pm |
Description: |
Teen Court is an alternative court system for juveniles. To qualify, the juvenile must be under 16, a first-time offender and must agree to plead guilty to the offense. Juveniles who qualify go through a sentencing hearing — with a judge, jury and attorneys — and have their record wiped clean if they complete the sentence. The sentence consists of community service, jury duty at subsequent Teen Court sessions and life skills seminars. High school students and law students play the part of the prosecuting and defense attorneys, delivering an opening statement, closing argument and questioning the juvenile defendant. The judge is usually a local attorney or judge volunteering his or her time. Sign up via the website below. |
