Information Patents: From Software to Genes

Date: Thursday, April 10, 2014
Time: 12:00 - 1:00 PM
Description: Come hear Dr. Saurabh Vishnubhakat, a postdoctoral associate at Duke Law School and the Duke Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy, speak about recent patent litigation and policy implications and the effect these changes in the law will have on the products and processes familiar to every day life.

The most pitched debate in modern patent law is over what should actually be eligible for patent protection, and in some respects, this categorical question has become a confusing shorthand for more specific policy choices. What is surprising about the debate, however, is that it has played out quite similarly in two fields that have traditionally been at opposite ends of the patent system: software and biotechnology. Drawing on significant recent judicial decisions and research, this seminar will discuss the challenge of patent-eligibility and its policy implications.
